Feng Zhengjie lives and works in Beijing, China. Zhengjie’s style is reminiscent of Warhol’s screen printed celebrities, both reflecting and glorifying popular culture while simultaneously offering a social critique on the rampant consumerism of society. His exemplification of commodification, commercialization, and kitsch are illustrated through beautifully rendered, vibrantly colored women. The women project the idea of the femme fatale; alluring in their fantastical sex appeal but destructive and disposable with vacant eyes and mind numbingly empty stares.
In school Zhengjie found inspiration in German Expressionism, but soon began to explore more expressionistic approaches of painting. Rejecting both socialist realism and the cannons of Western academic art, he found himself using the female image as a vehicle to express contemporary ideals. Zhengjie paints his subjects with richly hued clothes and luscious, expressive lips. The void within their eyes metaphorically represents the intangible emptiness that is their universal appeal, making them both elusive and enigmatic. Clearly having developed his own style, Zhengjie has become an important contributor to the Chinese and universal contemporary art world.
