b. 1853 and died 1890
Van Gogh spent his early adult life working for a firm of art dealers. After a brief spell as a teacher, he became a missionary worker in a very poor mining region. He did not embark upon a career as an artist until 1880. Van Gogh spent time in Nuenen from 1883- 1885, where his palette was of somber earth tones, particularly dark brown. It was during this period that he created Still Life with basket of Vegetables, a study exemplifying the contrast in color between his earlier and later work. It wasn’t until he encountered Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism in Paris that Van Gogh appropriated their brighter colors and style of painting into his own uniquely recognizable style, which was fully developed during the time he spent at Arles, The Dutch Post-Impressionist is considered a pioneer of what came to be known as Expressionism. He had an enormous influence on 20th century art, particularly on Fauvism and German Expressionism.
