b. 1927
Alex Katz is an American from Brooklyn, often associated with the Pop artists, known for his figural art, but really does not fit into a specific art movement besides the broad contemporary heading. Alex’s most used subject is his wife Ada, and he painted her countless times. His documentation of Ada, his wife, in paintings represents the most comprehensive painter-subject relationship in the history of painting. His portraits of her span over five decades and while his art is reductive and seems simple his aim is to make the viewer see the world through his eyes. It is often remarked how quickly Katz paints because his goal it to make art that has rhythmic lines, just like children. Over the last ten years, Katz has become increasingly popular with younger artists and is seeing a resurgence in museum shows and gallery shows with this next generation of painters.
