Julian Opie was born in London but raised in Oxford. He attended and graduated from Goldsmith College in 1982, achieving some early success. Julian's artwork typically has a flat or simple gradient faded background with a simpified caricature of his subject. Opie reduces photographs into figurative reproductions, creating highly simplified subjects. Details portray their personality as emphatically as possible. A black outline separating the figure from a flat background is also a common theme in his works. He entered the public eye after designing the cover for British band, Blur, Best of Album.
As one of the leading artist in computerized art, Opie implements the technology to cut out outlines and colored shapes sometimes on large banners. He also uses computers, sculptures and light installations in some of his other artworks in exhibits around the world.
