Jim Dine is an American pop artist educated at the University of Cincinnati and Ohio University. Early in his career he collaborated with the musician John Cage and others to create “Happenings,” chaotic performance art. In the early 1960s, Dine was then included in the groundbreaking Norton Simon Museum exhibit entitled New Paintings of Common Objects which many consider to be the first Pop Art exhibit. Dine’s art in the 1960s, like many other Pop Artists, made use of popular imagery but Dine took it a step further and personalized the art. He took his personal everyday objects and placed them on the canvases he was painting and art he was making. Dine continued to expand his horizons after this initial success and started making sculptures and prints.

Since that show Dine has continued to garner both museum and market success. In 1970 the Whitney Museum of Modern Art organized a major retrospective of his work and in 1978 the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) organized a retrospect of his etchings. More recently he had an exhibit at the Museum of Art in Kansas City, Museum and a show of his drawings at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC (2004) and He has continued to show in prominent galleries and gained wall space in many major European and American museums.
