Georges Braque
b. 1882 and died 1963
Georges Braque was an extremely influential figure in Modern Art. Along with Pablo Picasso, this French painter and sculpture was a major leader of the Cubism movement.
Braque originally followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather by studying decorating and house painting, but he also studied painting and quickly found his passion. His artistic journey began with a strong early influence by the Fauves movement and he adapted his work to be more impressionist based. Braque was always an avante-garde artist and while he enjoyed the artistic expression that the brilliant colors of Fauve advocated he also saw a mentor in Paul Cezanne. Braque continued to experiment with the way the artist's perspective represent reality and the underlying geometry of buildings and reality. Braque's works hang in many major international museums and continue to be inspiration for contemporary artists.
