Bacon was born in Dublin, Ireland. Numerous themes from his childhood played into his artwork. His family moved often, never giving him the chance to settle down and take roots. Throughout his profession career he continued feeling of displacement.
Bacon is a figurative painter best known for his triptychs many of which contain nightmarish imagery and bold painterly strokes. Bacon has continued to garner more and more international attention. At the Sotheby’s Contemporary and Post-War Evening sale of May 14, 2008 his Triptych 1976 sold for over $86million to Russian businessman Roman Abromovich, thereby setting a new record for a contemporary work of art. In the fall of 2008 Bacon had a well-received retrospective at the Tate Britain, London. The exhibit will then travel to the Prado Gallery in Madrid and finally to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Bacon worked in London primarily. He died of a heart attack April 28, 1992 in Madrid, Spain.
